System Requirements
DAVE requires the following hardware and software:
• Any Mac OS-compatible computers with a Motorola 68020 or higher processor.
• Mac OS 7.6.1 or later versions, including 8.X, 9.0 and 9.1.
• A minimum of 8 megabytes of RAM.
• Apple's MacTCP 2.0.6 or Open Transport TCP/IP 1.1 or later.
• DAVE Print Client requires Apple's LaserWriter 8 v8.3.4 or later.
• DAVE Desktop Printing requires Apple's LaserWriter 8 v8.6 or later.
• The Apple Text Encoding Converter (standard with Mac OS 8.0 or later) is required to support the new international text features of DAVE 2.5.1.
Microsoft Network Requirements
DAVE 2.5.2 requires at least one of the following systems in your network:
• Windows 2000
• Windows NT Workstation or Server version 3.51 or later
• Windows 95 or Windows 98
• Windows Me
• Macintosh running DAVE 2.5 or later
Before Installing DAVE 2.5.2
• You should verify your system volume with a verification tool such as Disk First Aid before installing. If your disk has problems, installing can prevent your Macintosh from operating properly, and you may lose files.
• Read the section “DAVE Known Limitations” to verify that DAVE will work on your computer.
• Before installation, make backup copies of the software and documents on your hard disk (especially your System Folder).
• You may install DAVE 2.5.2 with extensions turned off, but this is not required.
• DAVE requires a key in order for it to operate. Please have your key with you before you begin installation.
• DAVE 2.5.2 keeps track of shared folders differently that previous versions. You may need to reconfigure shared items using the DAVE Sharing control panel after installing.
• DAVE Print Client always installs in the off state. If you are updating from a previous version of DAVE, and are using Desktop Printing, you will need to turn the DAVE Print Client on before using any desktop printers that need it.
• DAVE Client 2.5 uses a different desktop database version than DAVE Client 1.0.1. Networks that have both DAVE Client 1.0.1 and 2.x may lose icon information. If you use DAVE Client 1.0.1 and DAVE Client 2.5.2 to access the same share then please update all DAVE Clients to version 2.5.2.
Installing DAVE on Non-English Systems
• We recommend that you install DAVE on the current system disk. If you must install DAVE on a different disk, make sure that that disk has the same language system as the currently booted system.
New Features Added to DAVE 2.5.2
• DAVE now supports the Keychain. DAVE components are keychain aware, but only the DAVE utility allows you to save credentials in the keychain.
• The DAVE utility now supports double-clicking on a file to open that file. When you double-click a file in a DAVE browser window, that location of the file will be mounted on your desktop, and the Finder will be asked to open the file.
Problems Fixed In DAVE 2.5.2
• DAVE Desktop Printing now installs and functions properly on non-English systems.
• The DAVE Location Manager modules get installed properly on non-English systems
• DAVE no longer installs the Text Encoding Converter on non-English systems. Your system should be using version 1.4.3 of the Text Encoding Converter, or you should use Mac OS 8.6 or later.
• The DAVE Utility no longer adds an extra filename extension when copying files to Windows shares.
• Files copied to Macintosh shared folders from Windows ME or Windows 98 computers now have the correct date and time.
• DAVE no longer creates folders with the system attribute set.
• A problem that prevented Adobe Illustrator and Quark from updating files has been fixed.
• DAVE Sharing now includes the time of day in its log file.
• Windows users now receive an appropriate message when trying to copy files with long names to the Macintosh.
• The DAVE utility does not use as much memory when copying a large number of files (>10000).
• The DAVE utility no longer reports errors about resource.frk folders when copying files as MacBinary files.
• The DAVE utility now works properly in time zones east of GMT.
DAVE 2.5.2 Known Limitations
• The DAVE utility does not display file sizes correctly until a "Get Information" is performed. This is done to speed up directory listings. The initial directory listing only displays the size of the file's data fork, and does not include the size of the resource fork.
• If you are copying whole volumes of files using the DAVE utility, you may need to increase the DAVE application's memory.
• DAVE PRINTING ONLY WORKS WITH POSTSCRIPT PRINTERS.
• HP LaserJet Users - DAVE Print Client will work with HP LaserJet printers, but you must use the LaserWriter 8 Chooser item. Be sure you are using version 8.3.4 or later. DAVE Print Client will not work with the HP LaserJet Chooser item supplied by Hewlett Packard - your Macintosh will crash or hang using this print driver.
• The new DAVE Desktop Printing does not require any AppleTalk, but DAVE Print Client does. You can use DAVE Desktop Printing with LaserWriter 8 version 8.6.5.
• DAVE Print Client requires AppleTalk to be turned on. You do not need to have AppleTalk configured on your network, however (You can use Remote Only). If you switch your AppleTalk connection using the AppleTalk control panel, you will need to turn the DAVE Print Client control panel off, then on again to make the print gateways appear on the new AppleTalk network.
• DAVE Print Client is supported under MacOS 8.X, but not under MacOS 9. You should use DAVE Desktop Printing with MacOS 9.
NOTE: DAVE Print Client will not work with the generic LaserWriter driver. You need to use LaserWriter 8 version 8.3.4 or later. Older versions of the LaserWriter drivers do not support the Adobe Document Structuring Conventions.
• Some Macintosh applications rely on File IDs staying the same even when a volume is unmounted and remounted, or after a long period of time. These applications may encounter difficulty when operating with DAVE, since files on DAVE volumes are not assigned permanent IDs. Some applications that rely on permanent IDs include Quark Express and BBEdit.
• When copying or creating files on a Windows for Workgroups server, the server only compares the first twelve characters of the file name. If the first twelve characters of two file names are the same, DAVE Client will return an error message stating that it cannot create the file because the file already exists.
• On Windows 95 machines, the desktop information may not automatically update. In order to see updated information, users may need to manually refresh their windows after copying or deleting files.
• The 'Get Printer Info' feature of Desktop Printing does not work correctly with the DAVE Print Client. The PostScript job sent by the Desktop Printing software does not follow the Adobe Document Structuring Conventions.
• Windows for Workgroups and Windows 95 machines may be able to access files from the Macintosh that contain illegal characters. These \/*?"<>| characters are considered illegal on Window’s machines. These special characters are encoded into a string containing a percent sign and a hex value.
• Microsoft Windows NT Backup utility will display warnings when backing up a DAVE volume. This is because DAVE Sharing does not support returning NT Security Descriptors.
• On a dual-boot PC, when the same folder is shared under Windows NT and Windows 95 (or 98), some files on the PC may not be accessible to the DAVE client under one OS that it created under the other OS.
• When using copy and paste to copy a file from a Macintosh using Windows 95/98 Explorer, filenames may get converted to all uppercase.
